Tutorial: Stamped Cupcake Flags

If you've been reading my blog for a little while, you probably saw the cupcake flags I made for my son's first birthday party:

My flags were stamped on each side with "happy" and "one."

A friend of mine asked me to make decorations for her daughter's first birthday party, and along with banners and favor tags, I'm making cupcake flags. The party is ladybug themed, so the colors black, red, and white work perfectly.

I thought I'd do a little tutorial as I was making up the flags to show you the process of making stamped cupcake flags.

First, cut a strip of card stock or designer paper 3" by 3/4". I like to use up paper scraps for these, but because I am working with a set color theme, I cut a bunch of strips from one sheet of paper.

I gathered the stamp I wanted to use, which is from a retired Stampin' Up! set called Beyond the Basics, and my ink pads. I'm using a variety of different spot ink pads. Stampin' Up!'s Real Red, a white pad from Studio G, and Memento's Tuxedo Black.

Ink up the stamp:

And start stamping. I placed my paper strip over a sheet of scrap paper so that I didn't get ink on my table. Stamp a few times and cover your strip (unless you're using a large stamp block which would cover with just one stamp).

Here's what you end up with:

Next, using either a score board (like mine from Martha Stewart) or a ruler and a bone folder/scoring tool, make a score mark in the center of your strip, at 1.5".

You could use them like this, but I wanted to cut mine into triangle flags. I just did this with a pair of scissors.

Next, apply adhesive to the plain inside of your flags. I'm using a Xyron Create-a-Sticker below, but I also have a Xyron Creatopia (which does 12x12 adhesive, along with die cutting and embossing) and a 5" Creative Station. I like to lay the flags out and roll through a bunch at once on those machines. It saves adhesive that way.

You'll end up with this. Rub around the edges of your flag with your fingertip and then peel the plastic sheet away.

Peel the flag off the backing, and place the top end of your toothpick into the flag. I like to hang a little bit of the top over the flag.

Press the ends together, and you're done!

Hope you enjoyed the tutorial! These are so simple to make and can be customized to match any party theme.

  1. I love how simple these are (in terms on being a small detail at a big party) but how much they add!
They are so so cute and really add a young fun touch to the cupcake display :-)
